Manager Systems Engineering
Job ID REQ-2024-4891 Omaha, NebraskaMAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Oversees systems engineering processes, directing the design, installation, and maintenance of IT infrastructure, including Windows, Linux, public cloud resources, and core services (DNS, DHCP, AD, Authentication).
Plans and negotiates the allocation of IT resources to support operational and project needs, ensuring efficient use of personnel and equipment.
Collaborates with executives and department heads to define business and system requirements for technology implementations.
Oversees system operations, including backup and recovery, security protocols (HIPAA compliance), and performance optimization. Ensures adherence to cost-effective and industry-standard security practices.
Hires, manages, and evaluates IT staff, fostering a team-oriented environment through changes and daily operations. Handles recruitment, development, scheduling, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions.
Analyzes existing systems and processes, recommending and implementing improvements to optimize IT performance and scalability.
Develops and enforces IT policies and procedures covering architecture, security, disaster recovery, purchasing, and service provisioning.
Maintains regular communication with stakeholders, delivering technical reports and updates on IT projects and performance metrics.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Comprehensive knowledge of IT infrastructure, including Microsoft products, public cloud platforms, and converged infrastructure systems.
Knowledge of key Linux system components (kernel, file systems, package management) and experience with automation tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Rundeck for Linux configuration.
Expertise in integrating and managing both Windows and Linux environments, ensuring seamless communication and compatibility between the two platforms.
Solid understanding of project management methodologies and their application to IT initiatives, including multi-platform environments (Windows/Linux).
In-depth understanding of Linux-specific security best practices including SELinux (Security-Enhanced Linux), firewall configurations, and secure access controls.
Proven ability to lead and motivate technical teams, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Capable of explaining complex technical concepts (Windows/Linux integrations, Linux troubleshooting) to non-technical stakeholders.
Proficient in using scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or PowerShell to automate routine tasks, monitor systems, and improve overall operational efficiency in both Linux and Windows environments.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks in high-pressure environments and align IT operations with business goals, ensuring high availability of both Linux and Windows systems.
In-depth understanding of data privacy practices, HIPAA requirements, and industry-specific security standards, with the ability to implement robust security measures in both Linux and Windows environments.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Minimum 5 years of network / systems administration experience including management required.
Strong experience in administering and managing Linux environments, particularly Red Hat and Rocky Linux distributions required.
Experience implementing industry-standard security protocols, compliance requirements (such as HIPAA), and system hardening in Linux environments required.
On-call (continuously or rotationally) to provide support required.
Ability to provide own transportation (mileage reimbursed) to complete travel requirements of the job required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Certifications in ITIL Foundation, MCTS – Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist, CompTIA Security+, or equivalent preferred.
